‘SOMETHING TO REMEMBER ME BY’

THESIS
2025

My collection explores the theme of love and loss through the allegory of Orpheus and Eurydice. By bridging the stories of the two musicians, one contemporary, and one from legend, this collection evokes this feeling of nostalgia and classicism.
Inspired by the story of Orpheus and Eurydice, I chose to reinterpret this story through Jimi Hendrix’s style and 1930s classicism in bridal gowns. Bridged by the way their music and its lasting posthumous impact, both Jimi Hendrix and Orpheus were known to move the world with their songs. Hendrix’s eccentric style was also noted to famously lean into a feminine influence from 1930s womens blouses and shirts; which partnered with this idea of carrying a past with you.
In this Greek myth, a musician named Orpheus falls in love with a nymph, Eurydice who dies. Heartbroken, Orpheus ventures into the Underworld to save her, striking a deal that if he was able to save them both from the Underworld without turning around. However when he hears her cry, he looks back to save her, losing her in the process until they can be reunited again in his afterlife. Interpolating the archetypes evident in Jimi Hendrix’s style; I will  juxtapose these with classical draping as seen in 1930s wedding dresses as inspired from Hellenistic imagery through the integration of prints from the famous paintings as well as bias cut lines, romantic cowl drapes, and shank button detailing. In the contrast of 60s era prints like paisley with the delicacy of silks and velvets, this creates a contemporary setting for this classic Greek tale.
